Considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time, Roald Dahl’s (1916-1990) popular children’s novels include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG and Matilda.

Dahl began his career writing for adults after his first short story was featured in The Saturday Evening Post. It recounted his adventures in World War II. In 1960, he began writing children’s stories while living with his family in England.

He was born in Wales to Norwegian parents and spent his childhood in England. When World War II began, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. He began to write at the age of 26 after moving to Washington, D.C.
